Phytochemical Assays & Research Monographs

Peer-reviewed chromatographic assay records, retention indices, and whole-herb metabolomic assessments.

Analytical Monograph: Matricaria chamomilla L. (Asteraceae)

Principal Investigators: Dr. Eleanor Vance, Ph.D.; Dr. Jonathan Lowe, D.Sc.
Laboratory ID: DE-VB-892 • Voucher Accession: #VB-MCH-2024 • Assay Code: VB-ASSAY-2408

1. Botanical Characterization & Authentication

Specimens of Matricaria chamomilla L. (syn. Chamomilla recutita) were collected at peak flowering anthesis. Morphological verification confirmed hollow conical receptacles and ligulate florets without paleae, definitively distinguishing the species from adulterant Anthemis taxa.

2. Chromatographic Assay Conditions

Assays were performed using an Agilent 1260 Infinity II HPLC system equipped with a quaternary pump, autosampler, and diode-array detector (DAD). Stationary phase: C18 reversed-phase column (250 x 4.6 mm, 5 μm particle size). Mobile phase: Solvent A (0.1% aqueous phosphoric acid), Solvent B (acetonitrile) using a standardized linear gradient elution at 1.0 mL/min flow rate. Detection monitored at 280 nm and 335 nm.

3. Quantitative Biomarker Results

  • Apigenin-7-O-glucoside: 1.84 ± 0.05% dry mass (Retention Time: 14.82 min)
  • Total Flavonoid Fraction: 2.65 ± 0.08% dry mass
  • Chamazulene Content (GC-MS): 0.42% essential oil fraction
  • Heavy Metals (ICP-MS): Lead < 0.02 ppm, Arsenic < 0.01 ppm, Cadmium < 0.01 ppm
